Musical Director

Matthew Hackett

Matthew was born in Croydon, Surrey in 1962 into a family of musicians. He decided to take up percussion when he was just six years old. In 1977 he joined the Croydon Brass Band – at the time conducted by Alf Jarvis. Alf persuaded Matthew to audition for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, which he passed with flying colours. His time with the Youth Band finished on a high in 1980 when they performed his full band arrangement of Mussourgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition conducted by James Scott in front of an audience of over 200 people.

After 3½ happy years with the Youth Band and at the tender age of 19 Matthew was appointed Musical Director of the Croydon Brass Band, a post he held for 24 years. In 1990 he married Elspeth whom he met at the band. His tenure at Croydon came to an end in 2003 not long after the band gained their highest ever placing of 4th at the Area Contest.

Matthew decided to concentrate on his arranging and for the next three years arranged and published several items through MMI Music and Thornes Music. His arranging repertoire has included solos, popular items, show music and major works.

He has never really lost the bug for the brass band as over the years he has played with Clacton-on-Sea, Redbridge, Friary Guildford, Becontree and Crystal Palace bands. His wife, Elspeth, has joined him at Brighton where she currently occupies the repiano cornet seat.

Matthew has enjoyed being back in the brass band fold with Brighton & Hove City Brass and getting back in to the hard work associated with the life of a brass band. Since joining Brighton Matthew and the band have had several contest successes the most significant of which being the qualification for the National Finals in Harrogate in 2008 and in Cheltenham in 2014.

Most of Matthew's spare time is taken up arranging and writing music for the Band.
